Growing Our Family

Hi, I'm Danielle!! Mama to André, born with lissencephaly. Taking every day as it comes, embracing the challenges and joys of raising a child with spe...

When our first child was diagnosed with lissencephaly (& therefore globally delayed), I knew our journey wouldn’t be cookie-cutter. Yet, nearly two years later, as I watch our family grow with a 21-month age gap between our boys, I can honestly say this path has been perfect for us and here’s why.
First and foremost, we are surrounded by an incredible village. Involved grandparents on both sides, a reliable respite team, and siblings, aunts, and cousins that are always ready to lend a hand. This support makes all the difference. Knock on wood, our toddler with lissencephaly is medically stable and sleeps through the night, a small miracle that has a huge impact on our family rhythm.
With that foundation, I’ve discovered some unexpected joys in having our children so close in age.
A close age gap means our older child can ride along in a stroller with the baby, making outings much easier. Many activities, like tummy time, tracking exercises, and reading, become double whammies, engaging both children at the same time. Diaper changes and getting dressed can happen side by side, making routines feel smoother and more manageable.
Our toddler is still small enough to be lifted and moved like a “baby,” which allows me to include him in all the developmental activities with our youngest. In a way, both boys are navigating similar stages together, which has been an unexpected gift.
Of course, this is just our experience. Every family’s journey looks different, and what works for us might not be the right fit for everyone. But for our little family, this path, though unconventional, has been exactly right.
