A young girl hugs her father

From the outside, the load that we carry probably appears unbelievably heavy.

Honestly, it is.

From the vantage point of those looking in, our life surely comes across as demanding, arduous and exhausting.

Those are all accurate descriptions.

At a glimpse, my version of parenthood may seem less than. One that most are quietly thankful that they don’t share in the experience.

Special needs parenting brings endless and indescribable anxiety, worry, fatigue, physical and mental strain.

However, that side of it, and the mere peek that most see is only a squinted glance at this life.

When the weight of this life is all that you perceive, all the beautiful things that accompany it are missed.

We are privy to a secret world, made up of exquisite marvel and wonder.

Time goes by more slowly, allowing us to hold on to childlike innocence longer.

A fierce love exists here. It’s so strong that it has the mighty power to communicate without words.

It knows no bounds.

It can move mountains.

It lights a fire in a mother’s soul that can’t be extinguished; it drives you to learn and become MORE.

My daughter is fifteen years old. Holding her in my arms is still a cherished privilege for me.

Seeing her twinkling eyes and joyful grin when I read her favorite bedtime stories is a priceless gift.

Hearing her gleeful laughter as I sing about itsy bitsy spiders and rowing boats is perfection.

Watching her pull her Daddy close for tight hugs, with a smile that envelops her entire face, melts my heart. Every single time.

Practicing a skill that seems impossible for years and finally witnessing it happen is purely magical.

Feeling her take my hands and bring them together to instruct me to “clap” with her is delightfully brilliant.

We don’t take anything for granted and we appreciate every little, beautiful moment.

This life isn’t for the faint of heart. It forces you to grow thicker skin.

Simultaneously, it also softens your heart.

It reveals a precious universe unbeknownst to most, where you’ll get to experience all the beautiful things you never knew existed.
